I have been teaching students for over 20 years, both privately and at schools, colleges and as part of BA, BMus and MMus degree programmes. Many former students now have successful careers as performers or teachers themselves. My students have ranged in age from seven to 70.
Excellent technique, co-ordination, time and reading are essential to any working musician, as well as a good sense of general musicianship. Whatever your goals or aspirations, these are all covered with a series of lessons tailored to your personal needs. If you’re looking to improve your technique, time, creativity, reading, independence and repertoire then please get in touch.

I’m a busy freelance drummer as well, currently playing for Toyah Willcox, Hazel O'Connor and Tim Rose Group amongst others, as well as for the UK tours of The Greatest Show and Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Previously I have performed in many diverse situations, from the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, The Drifters and the revue Stand By Me, to Sean Williamson, Gareth Gates, Marcus Collins and Ray Gelato.
My playing has taken me to many venues, concert halls and venues in the UK, Europe and beyond. I'm also often found depping in London with various shows and bands. My experience makes me ideally placed to develop the skills of enthusiastic students of all levels and ages.
Teaching takes place in a dedicated teaching room and with lots of free parking, or elsewhere by arrangement, including at your home subject to arrangement. Lessons are also possible via Skype, Google Hangouts and so on. I also offer teaching in music theory, music technology and production. I am fully insured and possess an enhanced DBS Certificate.

Testimonials and References
“John was my drum teacher, and I couldn’t have asked for a better one! He was patient and supportive and has an excellent knowledge of music theory, music tech and drum techniques. The skills he taught have helped me through my BA Commercial Music degree.”
“John is an outstanding teacher and helped me grasp a whole range of musical genres from jazz to progressive metal during my BA degree. He introduced me to the realms of orchestral percussion – something which was entirely new to me at that point in my career and provided me with a deep understanding of percussion within a wide variety of contexts, including in orchestras, big bands, smaller ensembles, and solo performances. His teaching, moreover, helped me secure a first-class degree, and provided me with the necessary skills to pursue postgraduate study and move into the workplace.
“In academic and performance terms, John has a truly Stakhanovite work ethic, which he combines with real intellectual originality and curiosity, a technical excellence, and genuine energy and enthusiasm. These truly shone throughout my time as his student and aided in my development as a percussionist and professional.”
